The end of the world as we know it

Perhaps the Maya knew something after all. Today, I find myself agreeing with Ann Coulter. Can the apocalypse be far behind?

On Sunday, Coulter tore into Newt Gingrich, criticizing him for his debate tactics and using arguments "you usually associate with Democrats." That's not the point of our agreement.

Where I find myself agreeing with her is in her defense of CNN's John King. King, you may remember, started his debate hosting job on Thursday evening by asking Gingrich about his ex-wife's comments on "open marriage." Gingrich stepped up to the plate and hit that one over the center field wall into the parking lot. Summoning up as much manufactured umbrage as he could muster, he used the question to rail against the evil media and the "elites" of New York and Washington. Newt is, of course, one of the most elite of Washington insiders.

Well, Coulter would not tolerate such criticism of John King, at least. Quoted by the Huffington Post, Coulter said, "John King is a completely fair reporter, an honorable reporter... and Newt Gingrich goes back to the well to attacking the media, and I resent that."

Why Coulter would resent that is a mystery to me. She's accused the media of lying about the economy in order to re-elect President Obama, and she is hardly a longtime supporter of any of the candidates. After pleading for NJ Governor Chris Christie to run because, otherwise, "... Romney will be the nominee and we'll lose," she is now supporting the former Massachusetts governor.

Nevertheless, I'll give her her due on this one. She finally uttered a sentence or two that contained the truth. But that's probably it.
